When a suspension bottoms out, a hard impact can be avoided by a bump stop. Perry Parts is a company that uses 3D-printing techniques to create this product. With this animation, we wanted to show the difference compared to a regular bump stop, and how the airflow moves inside the part on impact.
A rough 3D scan of the suspension was used to start the modeling process. Next, the entire assembly was modeled by hand and rigged for animation. With a custom rig, all parts can automatically move relative to the motion of the wheel. This allowed us to iterate on the dynamics of the suspension quickly.
